I just talked to my friend Dawn who has a home candle business. She was telling me how she can’t wait for October when the sales of her candles will really begin to ramp up. I hadn’t really thought about this but she told me that during the summer she only does about half the volume in a month as what she will do in candle sales during the months of October through April. I guess it makes sense.

I don’t know about you, but my candle burning during the summer is limited to outdoor candles, which I do use a few of. Come October though I’ll start looking around for candles to keep lit whenever I am home. Inevitably I’ll be buying some new candles for the winter.

So why bring up a candle business idea right now? Because if sales are going to heat up in October you want to be gearing up right now for your new candle business.
What do you need to do to get geared up?

If you think you would like to sell candles as a home based business, you’ll want to decide if you’re going to try and hold the inventory yourself (this can be costly), or have someone else hold it and send candles to your customers. Usually there’s a lot less in the realm of startup costs, but you also earn a little less. There’s also the storage issue. Dawn is lucky enough to have a whole large room in her house that she can dedicate to storing candles, but for a lot of us this is an issue. Obviously, having someone else store your inventory and send the candles on your behalf takes care of this issue.

In addition to the storage you have to consider getting the word out about your business. If you’re going to use the Internet as one vehicle to do this you want to have 30 to 90 days to get your site (it doesn’t have to be yours it can be a page you set up at Squidoo or ebay) to get found by the search engines. Obviously starting now gets you moving in the right direction.
