A Cautionary Tale

One of the things I love about working from home is that I get to have the routine I want. I usually get up, have some tea and breakfast (left over coffeecake this morning), turn on NPR and sit down to do the lighter tasks of the day. This morning that meant I was doing a little social media networking while still listening to the news. Normally, I can work and have the radio on in the background absorbing the gist of the stories without being totally drawn in, but in the business section today was a “cautionary story” that drew me in completely.

The story was about a couple who, like me, quit their jobs to start their own business. My heart went out to the woman of the couple as she spoke about crying more in the last three years than she had in all her life. She had had health problems, until recently she had thrown up every morning just due to her nerves. She didn’t say it, but I could imagine that they both had had difficulties sleeping.

I wouldn’t want to scare you off from starting your own business. I took the plunge and quit mine and haven’t been sorry since, but that doesn’t mean it’s been easy. I’ve had to actually live on less when I had hoped to live on more, but the trade offs have been completely worth it to me. Still, if you are thinking of quiting your job and starting your own business you may want to have a listen to this story first. Sounds like they’ll make it, but in my opinion no one should make the jump of quiting their job without having their eyes wide open.
