A couple of weeks ago Business Week ran an article “How Top Bloggers Earn Money.” It wasn’t the best title for the article since they were all making their money the same way by selling ad space, but that isn’t really the point that I am interested in at the moment (maybe I will write about it later though).

What the article did do was to profile a bunch of bloggers who are all doing nicely for themselves based off their blogs. You can see those profiles by going here and clicking on the individual pictures at the bottom of the page. Yes I know it looks way heavily dominated and that is part of the point and the reason for writing this blog. I don’t think the article did justice to the top money making women bloggers - and even in the cases where women were co-founders they weren’t pictured. Of course Tofuburger doesn’t want her identity known, but they could have even done something clever with that. The unfortunate part is that it creates the myth that blogging and the Internet are a man’s world which is far from the truth.

Out of 14 blogs profiled by Business Week there were four blogs, Go Fug Yourself, Michellemalkin.com, Boing Boing and I Can Has Cheezburger that were written by women or co-founded by women. I have a feeling though that this is just the proverbial tip of the iceberg.

Blogs by Women, a directory of blogs owned and run by women has 4,288 blogs listed, surely some of these women must be making descent incomes from their efforts, and this is probably just scratches the surface of women owned blogs since there are 15.5 million active blogs in 2007.

Frankly, I am not sure who the top money making female bloggers are but I’d like your nominations of who you think they might be? Which women bloggers do you read? what makes you think that they are generating descent incomes from their blog(s)?

Here are some clues on how to tell if a blogger is making money from her efforts.

  • She’s running specialized ads (not Adsense or Amazon Affiliates)
  • She has a large audience (20,000 page views per day)
  • She has a niche that they are at the top of
  • She writes for demographics that advertisers are most interested in reaching
